India Approves ₹1,500 Crore Scheme to Boost Critical Metal Recycling

The Government of India has approved an incentive programme worth ₹1,500 crore under its upcoming fiscal plan (FY 2026–2031) to promote the recycling of critical and strategic minerals. The initiative, sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee, aims to strengthen the nation’s circular economy by recovering valuable materials from e-waste, lithium-ion battery scrap, and end-of-life vehicles.

The move marks a significant policy shift toward securing domestic supplies of essential metals used in clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing. It also extends India’s recycling focus beyond conventional ferrous and steel scrap to include high-value, non-ferrous and rare materials such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium.

Analysts note that the government’s push toward critical metals recycling could have ripple effects across the wider non-ferrous market including zinc and galvanizing sectors as supply dynamics, pricing, and material sourcing strategies evolve in line with global sustainability goals.
